View Thread: ORF "not a Galil" receiver advice

Couple of questions.

OK looks like two things need to happen on the ORF receiver.

1. Heat treat, looks like it it needs to be redone just to be safe

2. Right side locking lug recess.

The heat treat fix would be to find a place that does this and send it.

Can the lug and recess be lapped down with Clover compound or is this a job for a jigged up bolt in a surface grinder. I tend to favor the lap as the surfaces can seat to each other but I'm worried that too much material needs to be removed.

Any Ideas?

The thing should most likely go to a heat treat place. I can ask the Harts where they get their heat treatment done or just have them send it to whoever they use.

Problem with heat treating is that depending on the metal, and what was done with it before, it can warp or slightly change the dimensions of the receiver.

I plan on getting the left and right side contact faces welded and then i'll machine the faces to my already existing headspace. I normally would not go for welding, but a gentleman I know who has been in the tool and die trade for a considerable amount of time informed me about a process/type of welding that "should" work. Whether it will or not is unknown at this time.

A Hard-facing Electrode will produce a Rc of ~53 if applied properly.
Something like a Stoody 35 rod would work great.
