View Thread: US compliant part marking

Doesn't the BATF say compliant parts must say "US made" on the part? I ordered some compliance kits and the trigger, sear, and hammer are marked with the letter C in circle and the gas piston and pistol grip in the kit have no markings at all. Are these parts legal or not?

I don't believe they have to be marked at all. They just have to be made here.

No.

None of the parts have to be marked. Originally none of the US made parts were marked. As people bought parts from different companies it became a sales gimmick of some companies to get people to buy their parts because they were marked "USA".

Then how the hell do you prove the parts are US made? Whats stopping me from reparking a FCG and saying its US made?

All kidding aside. No moral qualms and no "you better check first".....Is 922R something alot of people disregard? I dont wanna tell you the useless money Ive dropped on FAL mag floorplates and AK furniture to make my parts count. As Im getting more and more involved in my builds, Im seeing that with some weapons there is just NO way to build a compliant weapon.
Say a MG15, or a BREN or CZ75 (Nomenclature may be off, the CZech weapon the Bren was based on, or a Maxim or Lewis gun or a Madsen) NOBODY makes US parts for this stuff, no way near to make the 7 needed parts.
Am I the only guy who worries about 922?

Not all guns have the same number of parts from the "official list of 20", so depending on the build you may need very few US parts. Remember the law is no more than 10 imported parts from the list, if you have only say 12 parts on your build that requires only 2 US parts.
Also, many people building the less common kits are pretty much making their own US made parts where needed. If you make a part yourself and you live in the US, that is US made! Some of the FA FCG's are being replaced with semi ones from different guns. The AR15 groups are popular, and reduce the count by 3.
ScottD.
Screw it. Im just gonna built a full auto open bolt machine gun with a grenade launcher and a 10 inch bbl and all imported parts and a boyonet lug and a folding stock and a flamethrower and a built in survival kit with a bottle opener! That will show the MAN!
Ill let you know what my jail cell looks like...
Note to the MAN:
(The previous comment was a joke. I have no intention of building that stuff. Unregistered machine guns are bad, m'kay....)

I bought some “US-Made Parts”. My sales receipt says “Made in USA”, but the parts themselves aren’t marked. Is this a problem?
An unscrupulous dealer could simply take imported parts and sell them as US-Made. This is a problem. Compliance parts should be clearly marked as “US-Made”, or have the identity of the manufacturer, etc.
The law doesn't contain an exception to criminal liability for assembling a rifle with too many imported parts based on a good faith belief that you were using USA parts. It’s what is called a “strict liability” crime—there's no “mens rea” (Latin for “illegal intent”) element. The law imposes on you the obligation to perform due diligence. If you get duped, you could end up in prison. Of course, after you're in prison you could conceivably prosecute the seller for fraud. But that doesn’t help you.
For more information, check out the GonzoSKS1's post on the subject on the Survivor's SKS Boards web site.
“Caveat Emptor” is Latin for “let the buyer beware”.
You get the jist . . .
There is no formal marking requirement from ATF. But some folks are justifiable worried. However, even though there is no requirement, it's good for parts to have some sort of marking (USA, manufacturer, etc.). Even then the standard is "Made in the USA".

C means Century, piston is different than standard AK piston, eaysiest way tell is if it doesnt have the black dot at the head of the piston, it is US. The PG, if it is black plastic, probably US made.
I hated buying the complaince parts, but it's just not worth the hassle or worry to not have them.

So why the hell isn't Tapco stamping their receiver flats? Seems to me THAT might be helpful.

Because the flats are not actually a part, they're more of a "raw material" that you make a part out of.

That don't make no kinda sense. Whatever, it still would be "HELPFUL" if Tapco would do this, since they know it's going to become a "part" and will almost for certain be counted by the builder as one of the six. I also can't believe they'd pass up a chance to advertise like that.
I play the damn game 'cuz I bees law 'biding...it would just be less of a hassle if the sources of the parts made it CLEAR on the part that it's from a US source is all Ah's sayin'.
