I know this sounds like a dumb question ,but I having a hard time getting the barrel band springs off my 91/30.I don't want to force anything .I can push the flat spring in ,but I can't push the band springs toward the front sight without risking damage to the handguard or the band itself.I've heard of people breaking these .

you might check the Mosin Nagant forum.Yes the springs will break, but replacements are available if you really must remove them.

Well I had this rifle for a couple of years and I just wanted to make sure there was no pitting under the barrel.I heard other people doing that,so I got curious.

Are you trying to remove the stock from the rifle by removing/moving the barrel bands. Or actually trtying to remove the barrel band retainer springs? Different things.
Put a bit of oil aropund the barrel bands and push both sides at the same time once yopu clear the spring retainer which you must depress to let the band move toward the muzzle. It will be stiff but will come off. Sometimes easier to pukll from the muzzle end or let the top cover slide forward with the band to release some pressure off the stock.

I was confused ,and thought he wanted the band springs off since that's what he posted.
