View Thread: 1911 Sight Help

I have a SA 1911 Trophy Match but need to take the adjustable rearsight off and replace it with a fixed sight.
Am I right in thinking that I can just pop on a set of Novak Trijicons like they fit on the Operator models?
I'm giving SA a call tonight, but my accent usually confuses the hell out of them so thought I'd float this on here.
Thanks guys. :)
TwoBit
Do you mean the Novak Tritiums or the Trijicon offerings ?
What rear sight set up is on it now ? Stock ? Modified dovetail ? Milled slide (for low profile adjustables )?
Your front sight will be okay with the new rear ?
John@JCDLESales
Ex can you take a Pic. I do alot of 1911 work and if you can post a pic we can go from there.
the eXiLe
What I should have said is Novak Style as Novak have already told me they don't make a replacement.
The standard (stock) factory adjustable rear sight is on at the moment and just slots into a dovetail, but the rear of the slide is milled slightly lower to accomodate it.
From what I can tell (looking at pictures)from their site the standard tritium or just the standard black fixed style might just slot in?
Tried to get them on the phone, got put through to the custom shop, no one there so have now sent an e-mail.
I know it's wierd changing over to the fixed on a paper puncher, but the new regs have just been published for the French Mil Pistol matches and they are just done on caliber and the requirement for a fixed sight. I reckon if I just switch to a fixed sight on the TM it will give 'em a run for their money.
I would possibly have to change the front sight

Yes, just hold on a while John I'll get the camera....
the eXiLe
Ok, Here's what's on at the moment, what do you reckon, can it be done John?

If you can suggest anything that may work I'm all ears. Am I right in thinking that if the novak style SA sight slips into the existing dovetail there will be no problem at the front, i.e enough room for the sight, but the back may just look a little wierd with the gap underneatwhere the windage adjustment sits at present?
the eXiLe
Ok, spoke with SA and they tell me that it can't be done, there are 'no sights that fit that sight cut.' The only way they say is to change the slide or weld up the existing cut and re-cut for a new sight.
Who am I to argue with the big boys like SA
Apparently at the Shot Show this year there were some companies claiming that they would be making some fixed sights for that particular cut but so far haven't done.
Bugger
Bloody silly froggy regs! :mad_small
the eXiLe
Thanks anyway guys for the imput, it's much appreciated. :)
the eXiLe
Dude I ain't one for quitting easily, but you gotta remember I'm truely stuck in the third world when it comes to getting work like that done.
I'm not convinced it's the dovetail thats the problem, seems standard to me, it's the cuts for the actual sight base that cause the hitch?
What's annoying is I love the pistol just as it is, it was just a way of demonstrating how shit their NM regs are.
the eXiLe
Hey cheers for the offer, that's kind of you to offer. I was gonna give those guys a ring, might be worth a try.
bigwheel
They show (2006) heinie speciality, xs sight systems and meprolight as supplying several SA models with fixed rears The gun came with Novak patented low
profile, tritium or bo-mar type adjustable's as options.
swabbie
you might try calling Dawson precision or STI..Dawson does a lot of independant stuff.Dawson would be a good co to have recut the slide if you elect to go that way.
FWIW,you have a "Bo-mar" or " LPA" sight cut on the rear of ur slide.
John@JCDLESales
Ex I have gone through all the catalogs I have on hand. Both Brownell's Big Green No.59 and their 1911 Catalog. Sorry buddy I just can't seem to come up with any that will fit either. I'm a Meprolite dealer and they are just showing their stuff Day/Night Line for the XD.
Sorry Ex I couldn't be of more help :(
the eXiLe
Thanks John, that's put my mind at rest having you tell me that.
Thank you for going to all the trouble of looking for me.
I think it will have to be another new pistol now instead. :cool_smal
Thanks also to everyone for their imput on this.
bigwheel
It sure looks like xs sights makes one. Sp-0002s-5 or -6 They say to call
and they also offer in non tritium 1-888-744-4880
the eXiLe
I see they have the Trophy Match listed there, but only a replacement Adjustable rear not a fixed?
bigwheel
the number I listed is for fixed. trituim, the suffix is for staked front or dovetail
i believe, worth a call.
the eXiLe
Thanks for that, I think I'd best give them a call then. :cool_smal
bigwheel
If it doesn't work out leave a post, i got an account with brownells and I'll
give them a call for you. They are almost always spot on with tech advise.
By the way check out the polar bear in the basement.
the eXiLe
Cheers bigwheel that's great.
Just tried XS to see if those guys were still there...damn this time difference thing, will try this evening when they are fresh in at work.
They make some nice looking sights.
bigwheel
Just talked to a tech at Brownells. He said if it is a bomar cut it is wider than
any other sight and no fixed are available. The slide would have to be welded
up and recut, not something I would do to such a fine pistol. I think I would
buy a steel sight and add to and recut it. Got to be a machinist around that
can handle a little project like that. Ok, just spoke to kimber as I have one
that has the same bomar rear sight as yours. Their standard fixed rear
sight will fit the dove tail, they don't recommend it because of the gap left
under and behind on the slide, just a snag thing.
John@JCDLESales
Not a BoMar as the front of the last cut is angled forward. Not worth trying to Tig as to match the Stainless would be a real Crap Shoot. Ex I'd hang on to it and just get another 1911. Although IMHO it would be another Springy but more to suit your taste for the Novak Profile.
Hey the weather here is finally getting nice give it a month and come to the States man. Check on your Firearms Laws as to bringing something back with you and we'll find you a deal.
the eXiLe
I think another might be on the cards John, would certainly be a Springfield as I kind of like the brand.
No I reckon it's gonna have to stay as it is and I'll have to get looking for another.
Don't tempt me too much, it wouldn't be the first time I've had to import a firearm from the US, shame it's not as easy as just bringing one back and declaring it eh, maybe one day when the world gets sensible with gun owners.
bigwheel
John check out this heinie replacement for a kimber and tell me if you think it can be made to fit? http://www.heinie.com/1911sights.htm
I got set straight by heinie himself, it won't work.
John@JCDLESales
Nope BW the Rear Slant is wrong.

bigwheel
yeah, I figured that could be filed away on the sight easy enough but there
is something more that's way off, Heinie positively said no way. My kimber
slide is cut straight but the sight is angled like the adjustable shown on the
SA.
the eXiLe
Yup, looks like it's now a short wait as Heinie (thanks BW) are going to make a replacement, 3-4 months time all being well.
Still, got to speak to and write to some great folks, thanks again for all the help..job done guys.
Thanks
