View Thread: AMD-65 Legality in michigan w/ home build

ok....I think I understand the 26-30" must be registered in Michigan as a pistol "thingy"....Although you can still use a premade rifle receiver from any vendor (you dont have to use a pistol only receiver).
Now I have another question.....
I plan on doing a homebuild / bend from a flat receiver for my AMD 65.
Here is my plan...
#1 perminately attached a extended brake to make the 16"+ barrel requirement
#2 I wish to still retain the full function of the sidefolder--so I believe I will need to perminately install a short bolt/rod--etc into the back of the truntion to reach the minimum 26" length per Michigans requirement.
#3 Obvious part count requirements (trigger group/receiver/mag plate+follower/muzzle brake)..That should be plenty of count parts.
Am I missing anything else???..
and this leads to my question into Michigan law..
The local LEO requires the blank have a serial number for there 26-30" pistol registration!..Obviously a homebuild / bend rifle does not need to be registered, so the serial number is not needed for federal builds.
Does this sound right or does it sound like my local LEO simply dont know how to handle a registration for a "pistol" without a serial number?
thanks again

Ok... I made a lot of calls today to both the BAFT and the attorney general for Michigan to get this ironed out....
Yes it will need to be registered as a pistol in Michigan, but for the leo to complete the registration process, it needs to have "any" number applied somewhere on the weapon...hidden under furnature/barrel/site--somewhere and this will be the "Michigan" pistol registration number. The Michigan serial number does not need to be on the receiver.....So I pushed the envelope and asked the attorney general, "where in any Michigan law does it state a pistol must have a serial number"...."There are thousands of older weapons that where never given a serial number when manufatured, what do you do with these???"
A dead quit tone filled the phone lines(3 way with the two governing bodies)---answer "well there is'nt any law!"..."but I would appreciate it if you would apply any number or letters to identify the weapon for registration here in Michigan."
"Our system can't complete the registration process unless a number or a combination of numbers and letters are entered on this line."
I have decided that the trunion numbers/letters should fulfill the requirements for Michigan pistol registration in my build.
increadable...

I think i'm missing something here?
You want to use the sidefolder stock and permenantly attach a brake to make the federal bullshit law of 16", right?
How do you figure this to be a pistol?
Ak pistols cannot have have a buttstock or means to mount one or a front vertical grip also, or a means to mount one.
You sound like you are building an AMD with a permenantly fixed in place folder and legally making the bullshit fed 16" barrel length, thats a rifle and doesnt need a serial# on the receiver by federal standards..
If your doing a pistol build then none of the compliance parts apply, thats the federal requirements, fuck michigan

Im Michigan any rifle or shotgun that is 30" or less with the stock folded MUST be registered as a pistol. There isnt any way around it...I ended up trading off the M70 UF stock for a fixed stock becuase of this god damn law.

MOVE. I just got a call from a call from a dude in Michigan that was relocating to North Carolina and needed a job doing electrical work. Although I don't have enough work for myself at the time, I tried to give him some leads on employment with a few of the larger contractors here locally. He didn't have anything nice to say about Michigan.

That is fucking stupid!
I dont have anything good to say about michigan now.
Good to know though, as i live 5 minutes from their border.
