I read somewhere that not all M-38's have original stocks, that some where re-fitted with M-44 stocks? If so, how can you tell the difference between the two? arsenal marks?

I would suspect that the true M38 stocks didn't have cutouts for the bayo?

Your right swabbie......

M-38 Mosin Carbine-Original style stock

Quantity in Basket: None Code: MOSI0030-OPrice: $98.95

Quantity:

The M-38 carbine was selected to replace the M1907 carbine for use by cavalry, grenadiers and all other troops needing a short weapon. It was never designed for a bayonet and there is none to fit it. Hand-to-hand combat with German troops showed the need for a bayonet and a folding type was added to make the M-44 carbine. These feature the "original" style stock and do not have the relief for the M-44 bayonet. They are in caliber 7.62x54R, and in very good to excellent refurbished condition. Ammo pouch, sling and cleaning kit included. Add $10 for hand select year. Muzzles have been counterbored. FFL/C&R required!

this is from IOinc. (interordinance) web site. The price has come up on them but the two I purchased were in great shape.

Why didn't I think of that? Looks like I have an original stock, no bayo cut out. Thanks Guys!

Recall that in 1944 the Soviets stopped making these stocks for the most part and used M44 carbine stocks on both models. So you can have a 1944-1945 (one might argue 1943 as well) M38 in its original stock even if the stock is a M44 stock.

That poses an interesting question. Gunboards...Is there a difference in the mechanical componants between an M44 and an M38? Did they incorporate the screwed extractor? If I remember that North Cape publication, they talked about the need for a bayo as the reason. Welcome aboard and I'll wander over to Mosin Nagant.net sometime. Love those old girls.

No real differences overall other than the bayonet
