sun was out.temp 61 degrees today.took my M44 and my new handloads to the range. 17 gr of 2400 along with a 175GC boolit.
Loaded up about 30...ringing the gong consistently at 150 yds with elevation set for 400 meters :small_gri
have about 2or 300 I can load now..barrel is still spitting out black patches after 100 passes with GI bore cleaner :mad_small .I'll keep cleanin..eventually I'll get to metal? :laugh_sma
I did fire 4 or 5 Wolf full power to heat up the barrel..more black stuff :cry_small

about a year ago I found that if you try real hard you will NEVER get the bore of these old girls clean....Seems like they were baked in crud.
Congrats on getting the gong going. BTW Swab I found about 1/2 my MN's were zero'd for 100 meters throwing 1 inch and overlapping groups while the rear sight was set on the 300 and 400 meter mark. If I dropped it down to 100 and lollipopped the target, my elevation I was way off.....I've always wondered if they have a different concept of sight picture then us.

Swabbie,

I've used bullseye for plinking loads for lead and it was a little dirty but nothing a few patches of breakfree did not handle. I also have had real good luck with the foaming bore cleaner.

Were you shooting your own cast rounds? How close does the projectile fit the bore?

swabbie
Jim:I'm not castin yet.these were some bullets I bought off evil bay.ur cast boolits need to be sized .001 over bore diameter.
This M44 bore has to be seen to believe.I think AKJim is right. It may never come clean

the eXiLe
I agree with Jim, it may never come bright and shiny..ever. Have you tried giving it a good over night soaking with a good solvent, you can even buy plugs for this purpose, I just improvised. :D

swabbie
Ex..I've done pretty much everything.I can at least see the rifling now :laugh_sma .
Got my 91/30 in the mail yesterday.think I'll go shoot both of them and clean bores some more :tongue_sm .great way to enjoy a stogie

supposed to be 65 or so here tomorrow.
working on demilling the rusty C kit for my pistol build today.

the eXiLe
That'll do it swabbie, the 'next bullet' cleaning system! :cool_smal

Are ya going to post pics of the new addition?

my-rifle
At a local gunsmith's recommendation I bought Sweets 7.62 bore cleaner, and I use it with my plastic-coated cleaning rod and a .30 cal. nylon bore brush. I soak the bore with the 7.62 bore cleaner for about ten minutes, then run the bore brush through 120-150 times (in and out). Every 30 or so times I stop and run a dry patch through. If the patch comes out dark then I continue cleaning. By 150 it's usually clean. I use nylon brushes too. They hold up a lot better than bronze. At 150 I stop regardless of whether the patches come out clean. I don't want to damage my bore.

swabbie
weather was 66 and sunny :D
off to the range with my new (to me) 91/30.Decided to scrub the bore a few times as I was cleanin my "cowboy companion" 16" barrel Norinco.

Bore looked like my M44  ....shot it anyway :rofl_smal .ringing the 18" gong at 175 yds with my pet load.

tonite it's off to the man cave with a stogie and an adult beverage.I'll do my 150 strokes penance (per My rifle) :tongue_sm

May load up a few more rounds before I switch my Dillon over to peestola

mosinutty
I use J&B bore paste, It does wonders to the bores of these old mosins.

the eXiLe
Sweet's is about the strongest copper solvent you can use I think? Never tried it but it sounds like it does a good job. I have been using Barnes CR10 as I can get a regular supply.

Think I'll give that JB paste a try after reading that mosinutty, I have heard nothing but good reports about it, time I gave it a try.

swabbie
do you have a source for the JB paste Exile?..I can order it at dealer cost and ship it to you when I next order from Brownells.

the eXiLe
Hey thanks swabbie, that's a real kind offer I appreciate very much.

I can get that pretty easily here, in fact there is some on it's way as I write, hpefully with some more powder...been a real shortage of Vit N135 here for the best part of year.

swabbie
spent part of the day with a plastic brush and JB bore paste chucked in my cordless drill slowly running the brush up and down the bores of both Mosins.

68 and sunny here tomorrow.think I'll load up some of those pulled 147 gr Mosin boolits tonite(to eliminate the leading) and go play.

bore on the M44 is somewhat cleaner.M91 less so. :skull_cro oh well..all I got is time

have ordered scope mount from Darrel for th M91.decided to go the scout scope mount route to avoid bending bolt handle, etc.I can't even see a 6" bullseye at 100 yds :skull_cro

I once was told by a fairly reliable source that shooting a bullets dipped/coated in jeweller's rouge can help brighten up a bore.

Anyone else heard of this before?

swabbie
makes sense..David Tubb sells bore lapping/finishing kits of various abrasives.

the eXiLe
Swabbie, do you just neck size? If so, what neck die are you using...RCBS, LEE?

my-rifle
I wouldn't use bullets in jeweler's rouge personally.. The idea of squeezing mica into the walls of my bore kind of scares me. I'm thinking it might erode the bore pretty badly. Of course it is a $70 rifle, right?

swabbie
Ex this is new brass out of the 200 my sis in law bought me for me b'day. When I next reload it,I'm just gonna bump size it so that the brass fits both rifles.Eventually I'll buy a neck sizer mebe.

Swabbie

Hey shipmate try the Lee Classic Loader you can get them from MidwayUSA for under $15 and they neck size only.

First -- knock the primer out with a Lee Universal Decapper, Then clean, use a rubber mallet to drive them in the Lee Classic loader, Knock them out, insert primer, flare the neck with a Lee universal flaring die, measure powder, add to case, gently seat bullet with 7.62 x 54 seating die..... WASH, RINSE, Got to Range and Repeat. Good Times had by all.

I started casting and I've got a lot to learn. I'm doing well with my .358 pistol die, but casting the .311 or better for the Mosin Nagant is hit or miss for me.
