View Thread: Galil sight adjustment and other questions

hagar
I just bought one of the Aim Century Galils (Golani), and the rifle is totally unfamiliar to me. How do I adjust the sights for windage and elevation?

The only Galil type rifle I have ever shot, was a full auto R6 that was issued to a friend of mine in the SAP, and it shot like a dream. It's kind of funny I'm not familiar with them, because the R4 replaced the R1 rifle while I was in the South African Defence force, but I never got any training on them! I moved to the US in 1984, and they are not that common in civilian hands any more there.

I'd appreciate any other tips on them. Do they run with lube or grease? Accuracy potential? How do I mount a bipod, I bought one from Sportmens Guide.

Do these Century rifles have a 1 in 12 twist?

Hopefully I will not have any issues with the receiver, mine has a serial # in the 29XX range.

Here's a copy of the manual in PDF.

The original lube is like gun oil not grease. The factory bipod requires changing the gas block/ front sight block and handguard.

Most of the Century Galil's are built from early Galil's that had floating firing pins. Around 1984 or just after the Galil got a spring loaded firing pin. The early Century Galil's had the original old fieing pins. There were problems with slam fires and I think later Century Galil's got spring loaded firing pins added some how. Not sure if the bolts were replaced for newer ones or the old ones were modified.

The original 1980 R4's had wooden handguards, carry handles and floating firing pins. In 1981 all R4's were modified by removing the carry handle and a friction bushing was added inside the bolt around the firing pin to prevent slam fires. It just keeps the firing pin from sliding to easily insude the bolt.

I believe the Century Galil barrels are US-made and have faster rifling and are not chrome lined.

Some of the Century Galil's look to have the bipod gas block but most do not.

Timber Wolf
Congrats hagar, I just got mine this week. Well, it is still at my FFLs shop awaiting transfer (had a pistol coming too and will 4473/transfer both at the same time). I did get by and fondle her though, Looks good and tight, no buttstock or hand guard wobble as reported by some for earlier guns. Serial # on mine is 020XX and does have the bayonet lug even though AIM's description said not. Came with two nice lightly used mags. One fits well but the other is very tight and seems to be scraping a little metal from the upper back left of the mag when inserted. A little fitting is in order. I have a single Orlite 35 rounder and several rough but functional 50s (bought cheap from FWRA back-in-the-day) around somewhere but could not lay hands on them yesterday to take by and try. Yep, bought the mags and did not have a gun they fit at the time! :D

The manual that came with mine says these are 1 in 9 twist. I am planning a barrel-ectomy as this thing screams to be cut back to 15+-" and a flash hider welded on for 16.25" or so finished length. Of course the Galil is already a stone, I weighed it and then a 35 round steel mag full of Wolf .223 and they add up to just over 10 lbs. So shortening the barrel is really not going to add a great deal to the portability of the rifle. But it would fit in a shorter case! :laugh_sma

I had a couple other AK type folders handy and weighed them for comparison. My SAR-2 with Romy folder went a scant 8 lbs with a full synthetic mag. A Yugo M70-AB2 without mag scaled the same 8 lbs.

Let us know how yours shoots, I hope to get mine out to the range next week.
