Model 38 are less plentiful and more $$. Model 44 rifles are available from all major retailers. J&G, R Guns, AIM Surplus, InterOrdnance etc., and almost every Gun Show and many Gun Shops.
festus
They are cheap enough, cut one down to 16" and weld a brake on it. Post pictures too.

Holy Sh#t Festus! Don't let anyone over on Gunboards hear you say "cut one down". They'll be over here with pitchforks and rope looking to hang you for daring to in any way alter one of these rare and precious collectors' items.

Well that is not really true. Most of the site users I have do not make sporters but on the other hand such topics are spoken about on our boards. There are many boards that will ban you for mentioning a sporter so we are not nearly that harsh. One board we have , The Workbench, is dedicated to such subjects and are discussed often. I feel that what you do with your rifle is your call. It is not up to me. While I do not like sporters I do not have an issue with those that alter their own property.

It's not the mods who are so purist, it's the users. I stopped discussing such things on the Gunboards, as the users seem to have unrealistic expectations of the future value of Mosins. Many's the time I've encountered this elitist attitude among the Mosin crowd over there. "Don't touch the stocks", is the one I hear most frequently. Never mind that it raises the value of the gun. I think you're going to have a hard time denying the fact that since it's specifically a "collectors" forum, the crowd that gather there are collectors who resist changing these rifles and talk down to those who do.
Look, I like going over there to discuss certain things, but I don't go to the MN forum any more. Too many folks felt too strongly about trivial matters for my taste. Gunboards is for "serious" collectors which is apparently defined by the users. On the other hand these days most of the gun crowd "accumulate" Mosins rather than "collect" them, so the elitist attitude can be a bit of a turn-off.

I like the mosins, along with any other surplus rifle in its original condition. There's something about that original stock that I adore.Thats why for my sporting purposes I own a remington model 700 30-06.

It raises the value of the gun? A refinished stock?
Ok? I guess but not from what I have seen.
As for attitudes on refinishing and the like - Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint here. I see the other side as well when people that do refinish stocks or make sporters seem to wish to force this down people's throats as well. So there are two sides to all stories. You state "trivial " matters but while they might be trivial to you this might not be the case with others.
I do agree that if you want to know about the history of a Mosin, when it was made, when it was issued, what is the correct finish, and the like our site is more suited to this line of question than --- What kind of camo paint is best for the stock. Any site can answer that where as few can answer in detail "trivial" things as to the history of the Mosin in the manner we do. As I said too each his own. If you just wish to cut up a Mosin, paint it camo, or the like there are far better sites than ours for this sort of thing.

When you post to a forum, sometimes you may not like the replies. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Some folks have a hard time with that.

I do agree. I still do not like seeing someone beat up however which can indeed happen from time to time --- We are all gun owners and need to work together not try and divide each other. While I do not like sporters I have no issue with those that make them. Different strokes for different folks..... There is fault on all sides of this both on the purist and the sporters side since both groups can at times get heated. We have enough people out there that wish to take away our gun rights than to waste time beating up each other.

Ahem! Back to the original question, Geist762, you can find a nice selection of Mosin-Nagants at the site of almost any vendor. The rifles are as common as dirt. Aim Surplus (http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Russian_Laminated_M44_Mosin_Nagant_7.62x54R_Rifle.html), Classic Arms (http://www.classicarms.us/), and Impact Guns (http://www.impactguns.com/store/mosin_nagant_rifles.html) all have them just to name a few. They're usually in NRA Good to Very Good condition. Unfortunately this only applies to the exterior condition. Bore condition is always a crap-shoot with Mosin-Nagants. About half come in with badly worn bores, but even these will give you 4-MOA accuracy. I still like them. Part of the appeal of the Mosin-Nagant is the fact that the rifle is only slightly more complicated than a hammer.
