View Thread: Bolt Over on Galil problem

Ding
I can really use some help here.
I need to know the adjustment needed to correct this problem.the mags seem to be bottomed out.do I have to grind the mag catch or mill the whole assembly top side(the platform)..any help and pics would be helpful..it happens every 2-6 rounds.thanx

Ding,
I will try, need some answers though. Hows it bolting over? One round not ejecting and trying to feed the next? Ejecting then the bolted over round is getting dented in the neck portion of the case? Bolting over completely and leaving no marks on the case? Bolting over half way and cramming the bullet into the case?

hey todd, how ya doin and thanx for any help..I have about 2-4 rounds out of ten missing the bolt.it seems the bolt isn't picking up the round,a small scar lengthways on random cases.it's like it's just short of picking up the round, but then picks up 3,then misses one then picks up 4 misses one etc.-I think I know what is happening, but here is the 22 dollar problem, the mags are nice and tight,no wiggle up and down and no lateral either, this is got me stumped.I'm thinking it's the catch platform.what do I have to do to get the mag up? a little more to pick up the round better.I think that is the problem todd, not really positive.would I have to mill the receiver surface or the catch platform or is there something I'm missing.thanx for any suggestion..D

Ding,
Have you tried different mags? Is it consistant doing it only on the left or only on the right?

Todd@ORF

Ding
todd,Ive had six different mags in it and even pulled back and up on the mag while firing,to no avail.to me it seems like I need just a little more "up" to the mag.it seems to be taking "all" at some point and then missing one in no particular order(left and right) randomly..I'll break it down and look at it closely, might have something stuck in the well cavity.I don't know..This thing ran like a champ for years and years..thank you todd..D

Are you sure it's not short stroking for some reason? Does it ever happen on the first round when you pull the bolt fully back by hand?
It sound like your talking about a FTF issue?

Ding, remove the bolt. Insert an empty magazine and see how close the top of the mag is to the lower bolt rails. The 5.56mm cartridge has a small diameter and it doesn't take much for the bolt to miss the rounds in the magazine.

thanx 6500 and alles,I just started in that direction.I did put three mags in and they vary in height and four that are pretty close to the same and they look to be within tollerence of clearance..I have six mags that I use in this one and I figured I can take some off the top of the tang to bring it up a little.Just can't figure it,for almost 27 years it shot flawless then one day I take it out and it just acts up.Musta got the mags wet and they shrunk a bit.Thanx alles,6500 got me to thinkin about the over the top and mag height like you thought.something musta happened somewhere to cause this.I did find some gunk in the magwell seat so I am goin to try it t-day with a burst to see if that helped otherwise I am lost as to the cause and resign myself to fix the mag tangs and be done with it..thanx again my friends for the help and direction..

Is your gas port completely clear?

Have you tried another recoil spring?

Have you tried a mag with a new spring?

I'm thinking that short stroking is a definite possibility.

Just some guesses. :wink_smal

Ding
hey os,
yeah I checked the gas port, the mags are good, just an ever so slight difference in height or clearence as ya might say,no new recoil spring but still feels strong.been raining hard today here so I might let loose with some rounds manana, before football of course.thanx man for the input..

Could be the mag catch. Check for vertical play with the magazine in the receiver. My plastic Galil mags all gold the rounds up high. I have some steel ones that sit just as high but most steel Galil magazines sit a bit lower for some reason.

Ding
OOOPS,let off a burst today and forgot to tell the ol' lady,my bad.been sequestered in my shop all day watchin football.BTW found the problem, twas a piece of brass that was in the well where the mags lock up.It must have been sitting there since last used and collected dust,grease/oil covered it and looked like part of the machine.a quick shot of CLP a wipe and back in bidness, man I feel like a dumbarse.but I'm still in hot water but happy now so no loss.shops warm and quiet..LOL

thank you guys for the insight and help.make sure ya check and clean there before ya lose your marbles like I did..
