View Thread: how hard is it to put ARM parts on a built AR?

levi7.62
I basically want to get an ARM, and cut the bbl down to 16.5 inches. I saw one like that and fell in love. Im wondering how hard it is to install the carry handle and bipod, and if the gas chamber on the ARM is also different than the AR. Hope not, but that might prove a problem. Anyhow, does anyone know of cheap ARM kits, or the best way for a guy to get into the galil game without breaking the bank? Thanks.

completely different and incompatable.

you can convert an ARM to an AR, but not the other way.

you'd need a complete new barrel assembly

different gas block

different gas block length

on the RSA ARM, the handguard front ring is further forward.

Any ARM kits or parts around? I COULD get a AR kit, and then buy an ARM gas block, carry handle, bipod and gas tube and be just as good correct?

gunplumber
NO. Re-read my answer.

But is the barrel a differetn diameter? If not, it seems I could put on an ARM gas block, and gas tube. If the gas tube isnt the right length i could cut it or use an ar tube with an arm block. I know there are combinations, it seems obvious. I was just asking about which combinations are the most easy and feasable.

the ARM gas block is longer where it mounts to the barrel, and the hole spacing is different.

I suppose you could weld up the retaining pin holes, see if the gas ports will align and if not weld those in, and the redrill, and then let the ARM gas block overhang the section of the barrel that is contoured for the AR gas block.

I've changed several ARM blocks to ARs just by cutting the bipod and carry handle mounts off.

I think you will have much more trouble going the other way.

What If I DIDNT install the gas block from the ARM? Could I install the bipod and handle with some adjustments? I just want to get a Galil with the ARM handle and bipod for under $1000. And the Century Galils seem like the best deal. I know I can find the carry handle and the bipod somewhere. Anyhow, If that aint do-able, then basically you are saying that the only way to get the handle and bipod is to buy an ARM galil or build one up from a kit? Are there any reasonable kits around that you know of? Thanks for the help gunplumber!

the handle isn't an issue. it is intercahngeable. it is attached to an ARM rear handguard support and just slips behind the handguard. the israeli handguards are interchangeable (the R5/RL5 handguards from Lyttleton Engereering, RSA are longer)

The bipod needs two holes to attach to. I think you can fabricate a tube the size of the bipoid pin and then cut the tube into the right length pieces and then solder them to the AR block.

just a small note: there were (17) of the IMI galil ARM's imported in the late 80's with the 16.5" barrels. they are sweet shooters.
