Depends on what you want...

for 7.62 go with the polish PKMKS kit from global.
for 5.45 get a bulgy kit from wherever you can find one.
if you're into something different get an AMD-65 kit from centerfire.
if you wanna be the coolest guy on the block get a krink kit from k-var

The AMD kits are the only ones that arnt spankin new. The krink kits were never assembled into a rifle.

For replacement parts, look no further than the RSA trigger group and k-var US made furniture.

The AMD-65 will be a short-barreled rifle as far as BATFE is concerned. You'll have to get the paperwork straight. Or use a legal-length barrel on it.

That is good to know Packrat as I was contemplating buying one in the near future. Thanks for the heads up.

The Krink is my personal favorite right now. I need to get off my butt and fill out the SBR paperwork.

The AMD-65 has what a 12.5" bbl? something like that. The original flash hider (shudder...evil) can't be used. Is there a someone making compensators that look the part and are 4" length? Permenantly attach it to the bbl and you are good to go. Just like the company that is making a muzzle comp for the 14.5"
M4 bbl. Looks ALMOST like the original but is longer in order to hit the 16" bbl. length

the original muzzle brake can be used. FAC makes an extension that can be installed between the brake and barrel, and all threads silver soldered in place to get your 16.25. they also market a new brake that acheives the length and is of similar design. a fake can is another option. i am welding an extension to the front of the original brake, or turning a new one (haven't decided yet).

My vote is for the Krinkov. Tho, they do look stoopid with that long barrel thingy attached.

If your not set up with a press I'd rethink the Global Polish kit.
Interordanance sells some really nice Romanian kits.

Boss got one of those krink kits. Be aware ya might wanna refinish wood. Lower handguard(Foregrip?) is a beautiful piece of laminted wood, but the upper is slathered so thickly with whatever crap they put on there that it loosk plastic. So he's gonna have to take both down to wood and refinish to get a matching look, which is rather sad(Work wise) as that lower is about best looking piece of laminated I've seen.

The kit itself though is in great shape.

Hi all,

New member here, but then it’s looking like we’re all new.

As far as the coolest AK, in my book that would have to be the Krinkov, I’m also really liking the AK 104 and 105. When the AWB goes away (I’m an optimist and have been writing letters) I’d like to have a couple receivers ready to register as SBRs, build an AK 104 and two Krinks one each in 7.62 and 5.45. The 5.45 gun will need to have the folding stock but I think I’d like to leave the regular stock on the 7.62 rifles.

Something else I found while surfacing the other night is that Advanced Armament Corp. (http://www.advanced-armament.com/krinkov.html) builds a suppressor specifically for the Krinkov ant it will fit the 100 series rifles too.

How cool is that.

I have (had--now in daughter's hands) a SA2000, which was a single-stack AK that was sold cheaply a few years ago. It used the same barrel and gastube (and piston) as the AMD-65, and had the same muzzle brake. That little sucker works! If you're at a range, you'r neighbors on both sides will hate you; I've seen it blow a guy's hat off with the redirected gas.

If you'r going to put an extension on it, put a can on it. It will be too short for a real suppressor, but most people won't know that and it looks really kewl. Might as well leave the brake off; if it's inside the can, it won't work, and if it's on the end, it would look funny.

The short (20 rnd) magazines that are correct for the AMD-65 are available at reasonable prices now; you should get at least 1 to make it look good. And the time spent working on refinishing the wood on ANY rifle is not time lost; it will look good, make you proud the you did it yourself (you've put more of yourself into it; it's YOURS!), and it's time you won't be looking at other rifles and dreaming about adding another to your safe. (I find that the final steaming and sanding can be done while watching TV, so you're not really losing that time.)

Whatever you go for, good luck, and post a pic here when you finish.
