View Thread: Full Auto License

Sergeant
I got interested in getting a full auto because I can't get enough practice time in on base. (It is getting to be real important these days to be proficient with my wepon) And under "non-life threatening" conditions it's fun. I asked the local gun shop about owning one leagley and he said the Govt isn't taking any new applications for FA ownership. Is that right? It doesn't sound right.

Not true, but you have to have a form for each weapon (and pay the tax and go through the approval process each time.) So is not exactly a license. Find a NFA firearms dealer (listed at subguns.com) and talk to them, they can help you.

Sergeant
Thanks. I didn't think he was right.

although I can't read the guy's mind, he may have though you meant a newly produced select-fire (post 86 one)........in which case he is correct, you can't legally own one of those as a private citizen......the MG had to have been built prior to 86 (pre-86) and transferable in order for you to own one......then it's just a matter of filling out a ATF FORM 4, getting fingerprinted, passport photo and a form 5330-20, 200 dollar tax stamp and you can buy it.

and BTW is you haven't priced what transferable MG are going for......be prepared for some sticker shock, it's not uncomon for them to be in the 6-20+ grand range, depending on model. the cheapest MG I have seen would be the MACs...... around 3 grand or so.

So what are the regs for building one from parts, using a receiver flat?

16r40
unless you are a class II manufaturer, you cannot build one.......legally. the same 86 ban on buying a MG also makes it illegal to build one, ATF will not approve a FORM 1.

the 9th circuit court did make a ruling about the legality of building a homemade MG......now if you live in one of the states that the 9th has jurisdiction over, you can try your luck to see if the ATF will approve a form 1.

I wonder how many times just a common Joe that makes his rifle full auto gets caught? Seems like if you aren't distributing them on the street to make a few $, then how would you ever get caught? How would anyone ever know?

16r40
although there isn't any numbers, I would venture the guess that there just as many illegal MG as legal ones out there.............but all it takes is for someone to just say they have one to somebody, and that person tells someone else, and that one person tells someone else.......and so and so forth, and the next thing you know he's playing hide the salami with bubba for the next 10 years. just because you don't hear about it, doesn't mean folks aren't getting caught, the newspapers only will devote a story if there is a large round up of them. it isn't worth going to prison over a illegal MG, unless they got some kind of perverse martyrdom complex.

The sound of full auto tends to draw attention. Not much point in having a gun that you can't shoot for fear of getting caught.

Unless you are a C2 mfg. (like me) you can not build a full-auto. However you may buy all the transferrable machineguns your pocketbook can afford .. provided you live in a free state.

As best as I can figure .. there are at least 50-100 ILLEGAL AK's as there are LEGAL ones. Think about it. Joe Schmoe decides one day "f*ck it" and drills a stupid little hole .. installs parts and voila .. a 10 yr. prison sentence with Bubba (if he gets caught). I can not condone such actions and wish to have no part in them .. just giving you something to think about.

I have drawn alot of attention shooting full-auto and most of the local cops are really cool once they figure its legal.

I finally found a good answer to my full auto desires. I am building the AK semi. And a buddy that works at Combat Arms on base will let me have as much "practical training" as we can get away with. The M-16A2 started this whole mess any way. He is the guy that got my kids the ride of their lives in a HuVee. Seems fair, as I am expected to go to the dessert at the drop of a hat.

Where are you stationed at? Im at Fort Hood, dont do a lot of full auto fire since all my guns are semi, but I do enjoy bumpfiring until I burn the stocks off. Ive got a co-worker far enough out in the country that nobody bothers us when we shoot, so we can shoot just about anything at the berm. Shot the nuttplate for a IBA last weekend with a Glock 19, planning on doing it again this weekend with my Five seveN and my .454.

Also, don't forget the state regs. Many states have something to say about Class III ownership. It ain't all about the ATF (but it mostly is).

This may be a stupid question on my part ....but what is "bumpfiring" I hear it mentioned all the time and for the life of me ..I dont know. ??

festergrump
Bump firing is holding your trigger finger solidly in place while pulling the rifle forward with the forestock, thus allowing the kick of the rifle to engage the trigger mechanism very quickly (as fast as full auto, I hear. Never done it).

I also hear it takes some practice to maintain the forward pull in ratio with the rifle kick to achieve flawlessly. Many seem to have best luck while doing this while shooting their rifle from the hip, it seems.

do a search on the web and you will find all kinds of video of guys bump firing.
