Local news: News you won't see on TV! or anywhere else either, except here.
Got an email from our HOA president that they had a coon acting strange in their yard . Their dogs attacked it and it ran off to a neighbors yard where it was found dead. The animal control came out and removed the coon and sent it to Raleigh for analysis where it was found to be rabid. Their dogs then got booster shots for rabies from the vet. I called Raleigh this morning to ask what was legal to do if a strange coon showed up in my yard. Coon season is over. They said I had to call a game warden or county animal control to put it down, but they had no idea of a phone number to the local game official.
The dilemma is this, if I kill a funny acting coon, it probably is rabid, but I can't call for the officials to test it or I admit a game law violation. I then have to dispose of it and don't want to have the dogs dig it up, and burning it is not feasible here. Would a double trash bag and bleach be ok to kill the virus? Then I could just take it to the dumpster.
