New Keyboard. I take it you've got a USB keyboard. If restarting your system doesn't help (yes even XP), that would be my best guess. Your PC should also have a standard keyboard (PS2, mini DIN connector) jack in back, so if you've got an old pc around you could see if its' keyboard works. Unless your into serious gaming an EL cheapo one ie. MEMOREX or equivalent, usually under $20, should do you fine.

LOL Lucky ruled that out. switched from USB to PS2 new keyboard downloaded recent updates and rescaned . Asked at work was told scan may not show a worm (cutting and pasting letters in for this) running XP. any other thoughts?

Assuming you are an English speaking United States resident, try this, click "Start", click "Settings", click "Control Panel", click "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options", click "Regional and Language Options", click the "Languages" tab at the top of the window, then click the "Details..." button and make sure that it is set to "English (United States) - US" and that the Installed Services section says "EN English (United States)" and under the "Keyboard" selection it says "US".

Non-destructive annoyance viruses pretty much died out in the late 90s. It's possible you got an experimental one, but I seriously doubt it. New virus writers seem to be more interested in integrating code with gtbot, sdbot, and the like so they can remotely control certain aspects of your PC through IRC, or building integrated SMTP engines to mass-mail viruses with.

My last guess would be to use the system restore to earlier time. Its a damn good feature.

Well, thanks for all the help, and don't I feel like an ass now.
Homer "Doh!"
To make a long story short I left the USB keyboard plugged in and it was over-riding the new PS2 keyboard or something like that.
Looks like the old keyboard has gone tits up, and the new one is working fine. Mucho gras to everybody.
Wweeeebbbbbbbb,,,,mmmmmmmmmmmpppppp

Lucky, it may have been a case of coffee and baby drool :-) need the plastic dishwasher safe keyboard cover haha
