Hello, I am new to this site. I have been over on AK.net for some time. I am doing my first build and thought that I would share my progress with this site.
I have an AMD-65 kit that I purchased a few week ago. I am awaiting the receiver from ACE. I just found out that their new receiver is made from .045" instead of the .035" that they have been using.
Anyway, I have decided to use my AMD-65 buttstock but go with standard AK forends. To do this I found someone that traded gas tubes with me. The one he is sending is from a SA85M. I should have it within a few days.
I have also gone to the trouble to change out the lower HG retainer. To do this I first drove out the pins for the SB and GB. Then I pressed off the site block using a fixture (part #4) that I made that allowed me get inbetween the GB and SB to press.

Part #3 is a fixture I made that supported the SB while driving out the pins. The other fixtures in the photo is a dimple jig which I will talk about later.
As bad as I hated to, I ordered a retainer from $-VAR. That part and a center support rivet cost me $28 because of the $12 S/H charge. But I got the retainer yesterday and It is a perfect fit and is going to line up perfect with a gas tube retainer so I am glad I got it. I just got through pressing the gas block on. I put the barrel in the freezer and GB in the oven. I used a little oil, put the barrel in my vise with soft jaws (pic) and used a deep well socket to drive it on. I used a #32 drill to make sure that the pin holes line up, then I drove in the pins. Easier than I though it would be.

So, I am accually starting to put this thing together and it feels great. I have to admit that when I was at work the other day and I pressed off the SB and GB, I thought to myself," What am I doing?" I just new it would be a nitemare trying to get these parts back on and lined up with the pin holes.
I will update soon.
