Thanks for your site. It was a lifesaver (figuratively) for me. I had
wanted to get an ak for a very long time but didn't know a lot about
them in terms of nuts and bolts, what to buy, what not to, ect.

My dad (WWII vet-Italian Theatre) always loved guns and taught me to as
well. He was a 22 cal./shotgun kinda guy though because he grew up in
backwoods and liked to squirrel hunt and bird hunt . Always said M1's
were mostly crappy and variable. Had trouble arguing with him seeing as
how he had lugged one over all of Northern Italy. He had same opinion
about outdoor things (except hunting) like camping. Quote in answer to
question if he liked to go camping: "I camped out in Northern Italy
with the Fifth Army-I got a bellyfull of it"

Picked up a WASR 10 at a gunshow last October at closing time of the
last day for $139! Even though butthole stock, 10 round max capacity,
it had almost no cant and was basically sound. I delayed getting in to
the ak addiction because I flew ultralights and maintained, serviced and
rebuilt engines on them for myself and others. Another addiction there,
believe me! Because of my knowledge of metalworking and engine repair
and rebuilding, it wasn't hard to replace FCG, piston, ect. so I could
put pistol grip and stock on her. I then refinished furniture in black
(alumahyde), and put a red dot sight on. Not wanting to mill out the
mag well to accept 20+ rounders (not that hard to do for me, just feel
about her kind of like my first love, wouldn't change some things), I
did do one thing. Remember how grunts sometimes taped mags butt end to
butt end so as to just pull out, reverse and reinsert for a fresh load?
Carried it one step farther and got 10 (that's ten) ten round single
stacks and carefully welded the butt ends and then polished and and
refinished the mags. Looks like a 20 rounder mag for appearance but is
legal (f--- the Clinton Gun Ban-May it die and be deeply buried next
Sept). Thin welding is tricky but if you are careful....
Anyway I've put about 2500 rounds through her and had exactly one
failure to load. A close examination found the offending mag to have a
weak spring. Stretched and fixed it.

But your site is what I have used as my "bible"

Of course since then I've bought 3 Sar-1's without any modifications
other than cleaning and sighting in and they are sofine but...something
bout my original that just makes me shoot her so often. I now find
myself wanting well....all of them and all the ammo out there
too...guess that's addiction.

I am lucky that my Bro-in-Law has lots of empty woodland acessable only
by 4-wheel drive that we can shoot on. He's a nice guy but has been
taken over by aliens and only likes SKS's. Go figure. And him a Viet
Nam vet too. I gave him an SKS for Christmas...guess that makes me an
"enabler" of deviant behavior.

Again, thanks for your Romanian site.

Quote from Robert Matthau in movie "Failsafe": "If every Jew in Germany
had had a gun, how long do you think the Nazi nightime death squads
would have continued taking innocent people from their homes?"
