View Thread: The AK as it was meant to be
Packrat
Has anyone else been able to shoot one of these? I've shot 3: first was an AK that was stripped and cut, then rewelded back to almost original. I never looked at the rifling on this, nor put it on paper, but I've fired it when it was so hot you had to hold the wooden forearm with a rag, and it was dripping cosmoline/oil/bore cleaner out of the wood. It was open for anyone who wanted to shoot it, and most were shooting a full magazine at a burst. It never faultered.
The second was a Krinkov look-alike, built before the parts kits were available. I only got to fire a few shots through it, but it was a slow-firer, easy to control on FA as it was on SA. A real dream machine.
Third was a Hungarian AMD-65. I'm not sure whether it was built from a parts kit or built up from what was available, but it looked good and worked perfectly. It didn't shoot well in short bursts, but could be walked onto a target (and held there) without a problem. The vertical forearm grip really helped in controlling it. The grip has to be reversed (angled forward) so the magazine would fit. Everyone that fired it agreed that it was a good battle weapon.
Anyone else want to give your experiences with Rock 'n Roll, Ruskkie style?
ABOMS
Sure have, several,a friend of mine is a class 2 and has a indoor gange that will take 50 BMG.He rents them out and has a AK pistol thet even has 3 shot burst, real fun to shoot :D

Yup, got a C2 friend who builds up whatever kit I send him(get yourself one of THESE!).
I've dumped thousands of rounds thru two different guns; a standard wood stocked Chinese AK in 7.62mm and a sidefolder Krink in 5.45mm built on one of the Ohio Ord receivers. The 7.62 AK is fun, but a real handfull. The 5.45 Krink is a sweetie-pie. Very accurate and easy to hit with and as easy to carry as a handgun.
I've got a really nice RPK kit that I've thought about sending, but it breaks my heart to think of permanently sending it away. Might just keep that one and build a semi. I did send in a second 5.45 Krink kit for building a semi SBR. That one is awaiting transfer back to me. It's not auto, but it's still sweet!
BTW, the forward grip on the AMD is supposed to be reversed.

I have two Polytech AKs(SWD conversions) Both .223s, although one will be built into a RPK74 soon.

A buddy of mine has a registered Class 3 Steyr Maadi that was convereted back prior to '86.
Rude and crude, and that's the way it ought to be. As packrat said, get that sumbitch so hot you can't hold it and it will still eat ammo as fast as you can change magazines. :rofl_smal
Glock 17
Shot an actual AK-74 and an RPK while i was stationed in Camp Pendeleton, you wanna talk about a rocking sob that RPK can roll on with a good long belt. A lot more reliable than a SAW

You mean RPD, The RPK is clip fead...Sounds like that would be fun...If i was rich I would buy one of those RPD uppers for a FA, M/11...Not excactly right but lot cheaper than a tranferable RPD if there are any even?

so where are you from? Select fire Yugo RPK and M70 (AKM/AK-47) and an East German '74. Not available commonly here in the U.S. At least in a transferable version.
Thanks for the pic

Kilo, what are the grips on the RPK and AK-47? I've not seen these before.

Both the RPK and the M70 (the AKM/AK-47) are of Yugoslavian production. They not only have those distinctive grips, but unique handguards, butt-stock, and receiver. The receiver (as you can see well on the RPK) has a buldged/reinforced area right below the bolt carrier/charging handle. Yugoslav AKs are very unique in this regard.
If you like the grip, I believe that there is a US company that makes a repro of it.
Hope that helps.

Yes, on five continents. One of the job perks is playing with toys at someone elses expense :D
I knew it wasn't worth the risk of trying to bring any back, so I conducted kill-the-AK experiments before destroying them.
The most I could ever do was set the handguards on fire. I tossed one in sand once, without a magazine; they got tossed too. I had to remove the mag to whack the charging handle forward on the first round. Recalling another "test" in my misspent 'ute in a much wetter place, I tied it to some wreakage and used 550 cord from a long way off to pull the trigger.
whacka-whacka-whacka......
Impressive.
I took it apart and didn't see any damage, but, didn't shoot that one again.... :wink_smal

One of the guys in Fl (kernal panic) dumped sand into one to settle an argument with another shooter. Just a days' work for the AK.

I got to shoot an AKM for the first time last week. I put over 600 rounds through it without a hickup. Sweeeeet!

I fired one while in the Peace Corps in 90. The Peace Corps? Yeah, it was a guerilla's that was passing through the village in Bolivia that I was stationed in. I really couldn't tell you much about the gun as I really didn't know much about them then. It was a hoot though. This guy had family in the village otherwise I would guess he wouldn't have let me shoot it. BTW, two weeks later the PC pulled me out because of the guerilla (read DRUG) activity in the area and the added threat to my life as a visiting American. We were worth too much in ransom I guess to leave us there.

Knob Creek, West point Ky Oct. last year Krinkov's but they charged you up the kazoo for a 30 rd mag. I have 3 Pre-Ban AK's, 2 Poly Techs and 1 Norinco .223 all of which bump fire great and much cheaper that Knob Creek. I have 3 Post-Bans that I have not tried yet, 1 MAK 90 with US parts 1 Bulgie 100H and 1 Romanian.

Thanks for the post adh! (you must be in the Balkans) since you have Zastava made Kalashinkov's!
To clarify packrat, the top (with bipod) is a Yugoslav M-72B1 (RPK) alittle different from the USSR RPK!
The second rifle down, is a Yugoslav M-64A (AK-47) not M-70B1.
*3rd Model, Milled reciever!
The third, is an East German MpiAKS-74N (AKS-74) 5.45x39mm
And the last is the Yugoslav M-59/66A1 (SKS)
Yugoslav (USSR) designations,
M-64A (AK-47)
M-64B (AKS-47)
M-70B1 (AKM)
M-70AB2 (AKMS)
At some point the Iraqi's were assisted by the Yugoslavs to make their own Kalashnikov. The Tabuk, (which has been made in a fixed stock, folding stock & carbine/sub-machine gun version's.) As well, as an RPK, AL-Quds. I have not been able to handle any myself, but from photos they appear to be indentical to the Yugoslav orginals.

Ran a mag thru a Galil and was VERY impressed with it. It was a SWD modification done in 83.
Played with lots of FA arms that day, Glock 17, M-1919, AR-15 with lightning link in .223/9mm/7.63x39, Frianchi 9mm (Slow firing bullet hose and WAY cool to 'walk' onto target), M-11/9mm, M-11/.380 (Both fire much too fast! but were suppressed and suppressor made for easier control) and a Class II modified Yugo SKS which was a Jam-O-Matic unless the factory 10 round mag was used which made full auto fire kinda moot.
Would I own any of these? Nope. Well maybe the Glock :)
Homebrew
FA Glock pistol is the 18.
Etek
Homebrew,
I believe it was a 17 modified by a Class II not an 18.
Either way, it was LOTS of fun Bro!
