Why did Jesus tell His disciples to buy a sword?
At the Last Supper, Luke records this dialogue:
He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That is enough,” he replied.

35 And He said to them, “ When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [e]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [f]whoever has no sword is to sell his [g]coat and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ‘ And He was numbered with transgressors’; for that which refers to Me has its [h]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
===================================
the why they were to get or have them
=====================================
49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus answered and said, “[j]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

Jesus owned major shares in both steel mills in the Samaria area. He also had the support of 2 of the 3 steel unions in Samaria and Galilee he won the support by a promise of 5 day work week and national health care system. He wanted to be Governor. He ended up losing his bid for the governor. The main stream media controlled by the new and rising "Wine Party" found out about his hidden bank accounts in Egypt. They crucified him in the papers and billboard adds. In those days they fed a politician to the lions. With his run for governor over He took a position with a human rights group working with blind, homeless, needy, and sick kinda ike UNISEF of his day. This organization grew world wide and changed there name some time after his death to the Christian Church and then it took off. He also had a few book deals and a major motion picture deal. His origination received all proceed from the later after his death.:):)

How about Ephesians 6:17....and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God:

BTW the more important question here is why did Jesus choose men like Peter?
The desciples were manly men, tough, fighters.
Not the pussies of today, cowards.
Jesus knew exactly what Peter would do with it.

just to add .02 real quick. There were many political and religous groups at the time of Christ. you hear of two all the time Pharisees and saducees and while they were the dominate two there were others including the Essenes which we believe was the sect of judiasm that preserved the Dead Sea Scrolls as we call them today. A truly amazing find and a confirmation on the accuracy of Scripture through all those centuries. The Essenes recognized the time they lived and knew Messiah was coming in their lifetime and rejected the sin and corruption of Jerusalem and other towns. They communed out in the wilderness and awaited what they mistakenly understood to be the end of the current age.
There was also a group called the Zealots and they advanced the cause for violent overthrow of the Romans ruling over them. It is widely believed that one or more of the disciples that Jesus invited to follow Him were of this sort. Evidence is when Simon Peter got angry and tried to kill one of the guards while making an arrest on Jesus.
But as with all the disciples you have to compare the men before Pentacost or Shavuot as recorded in Acts and after the event.
The Holy Spirit now operating in their lives made them powerful for service but not in the physical or fleshly way. Look at the result of the Spirit of God in their lives from when they were just Jesus followers to when they were believers.

The meaning of, "All that take sword, perish" is certainly mysterious..How many soldiers or cops died peacefully in their beds at old age? What about that Roman Centurion (slays men WITH SWORDS OMG) who, according to Jesus, was oh so "righteous"?
Clearly using a sword or "gun" is not evil or guaranteed to get you shot. Then we must ask ourselves what does that verse really frackin mean!?

In the end, we ALL "perish". But those who "take sword" at least have a chance to not perish by the tyranny of the wicked men who would take their lives otherwise at will. I think perhaps the other line about "God helps those who help themselves" comes into play here, too.

I'm curious, but when you use "God helps those who help themselves" exactly what scripture in the Bible are you referring to?

David murdered and killed, he killed 10s of thousands if not 100s of thousands and yet he did not die by the sword. He died in misery.
Live by.......die by.......... it's a reflection of attitude. One can choose to live in peace or live by war and all that comes with it.
Simply reflects a choice..........to follow God's law and commands or to live in distress. Means nothing more.

Jesus never advocated violence! He plainly said if my kingdom was of this world My Father would send 12 legions of angels to fight. Setting up his kingdom in this world. He would really only need one.

No he didnt, but he sure had no problem being violent when necessary. The same goes for the "buy a sword" passage....Jesus knew times were tough, travel was dangerous, arm yourself for DEFFENCE not offence as one spreads the gospel and lives in a corrupt world.

Absolutely correct, this is a very important distinction, the difference between self defense and offense against others, especially as it pertains to religion.
Not to be confused with Him kicking the money changers out of His Fathers house. Ep. 4:26 Be angry and sin not.
Paul, spoke of perils in II Cor. 11:26, after the manner of men fighting with beasts in I Cor. 15:32, but i think this scripture is a stretch. Where i think self defense can be seen

"Those who live by the sword shall die by sword" I believe it means those who are violent without good reason. If you’re a tyrant who loves shooting people in the back of the head, Chances are you'll die in a similar fashion.

It was explained to me that the point of having the two swords was to show that his folowers could have defended him by worldly means ,had they chosen to. That is to say to show that he willingly went into captivity.
