WHAT IS A TIN OF 720 RDS NORINCO 7.62X39 STEEL CORE WORTH?
IT IS COPPER WASHED WITH 73 DATE STAMP. FOUND IT IN THE BACK OF MY STORAGE CLOSET. I GUESS I PURCHASED IT IN THE EARLY 90'S.

well, remember, they banned those steel cores a while back, you having ammo that can pierce a vest from 200 yds no problem could make it worth double, even tripple to the right buyer...

New member... just signed up yesterday.
Saw the post about the steel core ammo and also wondered the value.
I have one tin plus some out of the tin (from an opened tin) all in wrappers and
on strippers. (mine looks just like the photo in another post here).
I also have some in yellow boxes... not sure if they are on strippers.
please let me know it anyone is interested.

By the way... this is a great site.

If anyone post back... it may take me awhile to respond as my computer is down and I have to visit friends and relatives to get my internet fix right now.

Thanks.

prolly up to $300

that's what it sells for. please bear in mind this is not AP ammo, and has a mild steel core. but it is scarce and does sell for a premium.

that is not AP. many eastern bloc countries used mild steel cores in their everyday ball ammo, as it's cheaper than lead. lead is better, but more expensive. true AP has a painted bullet tip. the norinco stuff that used to be sold here commonly is steel core, but not AP because the true AP ammo had a hardened steel core.

the common steel core ball ammo does not penetrate much better, if it penetrates any better at all, than lead core. surprising but true.

but the truth and the market often have little to do with each other. your mild steel core run-of-the-mill norinco ammo is still worth 3 - 5 times what its lead core counterpart is worth. sell it and be glad for the money, because there is nothing really special about the ammo.

I don't mean to criticize what you have going on, what you have is still worth plenty, but IMHO it's best use is to sell it, not shoot it.

THANKS,
No offense taken, I welcome your input... if I didn't want to know I wouldn't ask. I figure you guys know more than I do (just don't get a big head cause knowing more than me isn't too difficult).
And thanks for the links... never too late to learn something.

By the way, what glen avon says...

The Chinese steel core ammo in question was not designed as AP ammo. It simply has a steel core (mostly for cost reasons).

The Feds simply redesignated all the steel core ammo as AP and severely regulated it's sale in pistol cartridges (which includes the 7.62x39mm because it's a pistol cartridge, don't you know...). If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's got to be a chicken (in the FedGov way of slamming gun owners...).

You might want to check up on the regulations for this "AP" ammo. I think that you'll find that you must keep a record of who you sell it to, even if you're "just" an individual selling it. I'd be especially careful about doing this since you've announced to the world that you have some of this evil "AP" stuff (which, again, is legal to own and sell as an individual as long as you follow the regs)...

Of course, I'm talking about Federal regulations when I say this... It goes without saying (but I'm saying it anyway) that your state and/or local boys may certainly have made it illegal for you to possess it or sell it...
