Ok, how do you make them in 80% receivers?

I'd say making actual dimples would be pritty damn hard. Easiest thing to do would be to shim up the sides of the mag well like they do in converted WASRs

Yea, I know that way, but I want it to look like a real receiver. I wonder why the makers of 80% receivers don't do that step? Would it make the receiver 81%? :laugh_sma After all, it's just a "U" shaped channel of sheet metal.

I wish I had a dollar every time I explained this;
Ahem.
They really aren't neccessary for the completion of your bent metal reciever. If your mag wobbles you can epoxy some shims inside the reciever.
HOWEVER, if you insist on making dimples on your bent metal blank, you'll first need to make a die. This should be in three parts. The punch part, the die part-don't forget to include the thickness of the material when making this- and a bridge to go over the dimple you already made.
This is all assuming you have a press.And some way to macine metal.
When you have everything already made, and mounted in your press, heat the area to be dimpled red hot and press. VICTROLLA! Ya gots a dimple.If you do not heat the area up first you'll tear the metal.
This is just the meat of it. if need more specific info just ask.

Others have made dimples in 80% receivers. You need to make a dimple die. I have a drawing for one but its pretty simple to make. You use a 1/4" ball end mill to cut your female die and you can use a belt-sander to make your male part.
The good thing about an 80% receiver is that it hasnt been heat-treated and will stretch.
I have made the trigger bulg like that on the AK74 under the trigger gaurd using nothing more than two scraps of cold-rolled steel and a Craftsman socket on its side.
****Ooops, I guess I took to long to finish my post. (had a phone call)

If you use the good lower rails, the one that have the lower lip that must be fitted to the mag, dimples are unnecessary.

7.62x39 is correct. (Good to see you Max) I personally want dimples just because I think they look authentic.Of course, I have also seen Russian AKs without them. For me its all relevant to the amount of aggravation invloved. I want dimples up to the point that its no longer fun trying to make them.
Fortunately, Im confident I CAN make them. :)

I just built a bentmetal receiver for my brother and he had a fit for dimples.....so I welded a piece of metal into each side of the receiver and used a Dremel to cut the dimples into the now thicker material.
It looks authentic and did not cost anything to buy jigs. :sidegrin_
