when you press in a non-matching ak-74 barrel into a matching kit and it head-spaces perfectly without needed an over-sized pin

Today I am happy!

can't wait to finish this build

although I got a few more to finish up too

haha, yeah, when I was enthralled! Thank you what-a-country for putting a barrel that fits my kit! $300 and I have an original barrel Ak-74, even getting a free nodak spud receiver from a friend of mine who's doing a receiver replacement on his krinkov (he's ordered a 74ullc receiver so I get his old one >:D)

I've had some good luck with this build

I guess my luck just ran out. Working on my third WAC Bulgarian. First was perfect...second was just a cat hair short.....third.....RATS......anybody know a good source for oversized reamers?

bfgmovies, Is your workbench carpeted or do you just build in the middle of the living room floor? LOL

AK-builder sells some, but people say that their oversized reamers and pins are grosley too large, I'm not sure where else would sell some smaller oversized pins but i would love to know.

and lol no, actually I live in a small 12 foot by 12 foot room and that's all the room I have to live with so it's pretty much covered with tools, presses, drills, jigs, guns, parts kits etc.

bfgmovies,
Given how much space/tools/time it takes me to complete a build....you have my admiration if you're able to do it all in that small a space let alone live there as well. :D

I started work on my fourth Bulgarian 74 since I couldn't finish the third until I acquire a reamer and oversized pin. Checking headspace on the forth....looks like I'll be able to spread the cost of that reamer over a couple builds.....:sad_small Seems my luck is still holding.

thanks! I don't ever let anything get in the way of doing things I love.

but yeah, I had to bite the bullet and get a reamer to drill oversized pins for a couple builds I did as well. in the long run it's worth it i guess, but reamers really are expensive

You can find a chucking reamer in virtually any size you need at McMaster Carr. Here is their reamer page: http://www.mcmaster.com/#reamers/=hbinrz

The basic hole for the pin is diameter 0.2756" (7,00mm) so there is your starting point. You just need to determine the size that will allow you about a 75% minimum clean-up of the hole.

You could start with a reamer that is about 0.280" and see what you get - increasing the diameter by 0.005" each time. So you may need to purchase a couple of reamers and work your way to this end. I do not know what type of measuring tools you have.

Finally, you will need a new pin. It does not need to be super-hard to work. A pin of sufficient hardness (at least 35 Rockwell C) can be machined from drill rod and heat-treated or you could use a Grade 8 or higher screw for the pin stock. Your interference fit needs to be from 0.0005" to 0.0010" assuming that you achieve at least a 75% cleanup. Any machine shop can make this for you.

You do want to make it so it is never apparent to the eye that the pin is oversize. One (01) idea - try a diameter 0.2813" reamer first. This is a fractional diameter 9/32" reamer and it is a standard size = lower cost.

Rforbus,
Thanks for the link to McMaster Carr. I had already been doing some online research and had found.... http://drillsandcutters.com/ The prices seem quite reasonable unless their tools are total crap. Any experience with them? I had been looking right along the lines of your recommendations and was planning to use the K sized reamer (.2810") and since they also list drill shaft blanks.....I was looking at the 9/32" (.2812") for my over-sized pin stock. Shouldn't be too hard to polish it down to the proper interference fit. The reamer will probably cut a little larger in my HF drill press anyway. Does the pin really need to be harder than drill stock for proper function?

Until I get reamers and pins....I've been keeping busy baking Ceracoat on individual parts.

No, it does not really need to be hard. Regular drill rod stock is not hardened although it is tough and gummy to machine. The chief advantage to higher hardness is that the pin will resist galling when pressed into the hole with some interference - that's all. The original pins are fairly hard for this reason.

The drill blank you selected is already at full hardness and difficult to alter unless you have grinding machinery or a chop saw and a lot of Emery cloth and patience to polish it to the correct diameter. These are used to make special cutting tools as a rule and are ground from the solid. If you can purchase a piece of unhardened drill rod it will work fine. Some guys just use a twist drill of the correct size (miked at the shank); saw it from the fluted section with a chop saw (or a bench grinder in a pinch) and polish the shank end until it is the correct diameter.

The reamer will always cut oversize if it is sharp. How much? That depends on many things - hole preparation, chuck runout, alignment, lubricant, etc. I think it is safe to say it may cut as much as 0.001" oversize when used in a drill press.

No; I have not heard of Drillsandcutters.com but I will check them out. I think you are on the right path.

Just in case some are interested.....I ordered tools from Drills and Cutters on 5/1 and received them today 5/4! That's pretty amazing service for a shipment from New York to Oregon. They did backorder me on one reamer and I'm hoping I won't have to wait too long for that but everything else looks good. Only part marked with origin is the .2880 reamer from Yugoslavia. If they function as good as they look.....I'll be very pleased indeed. :D
