Hi all,

So, I have a problem. (Well, more than one but this one is kind of unique.) I live in California. I bought a Tiger and have to keep it out of state because... well, you know. So what I want to do is have the guardian remove the stock and send it to me but don't know what to tell him. I have the manual and am just not smart enough to figure out how to take the wood off.

See, the idea is to have the "pistol grip / thumbhole" stock as a model and to carve a stock like a Monte Carlo so I can have the rifle here. Once it's here I can make a stock that "should" help me compensate for the long distance from the trigger to the end of the receiver. I don't figure it will be truly comfortable but just being able to shoot it would be great.

Once I have a stock made I might even try to convince Ed or someone else to make "California Stocks" for these rifles. As near as I can figure the only thing making them illegal here are the stocks. A good, legal stock would open up the California market for everyone who has one of these that they want to sell.

Thanks for any advice.

Tom

It's pretty staightforward. I'm surprised the seller can't figure it out. You just remove the little screw on the plastic grip cap. That will give him access to the stock screw which is inside the grip. Just unscrew that and then looking from the inside of the receiver, remove the other screw from the top of the butt stock.

The butt is mated to the receiver very tightly. It needs to be to help accuracy. He needs to gently tap the stock straight back and down to get it off.

I should add that there is a russian factory original stock that is made for the Tiger that should be California compliant. http://www.dragunov.net/tiger_custom.htm Scroll to the bottom to see the Monte Carlo style. I used to have one of these a while back but sold it to a guy in LA so he wouldn't have to register his.

Are you the same galahad from the Bay Area? Which dealer did you find to handle the transfer? I know someone who it contemplating the same thing.

It was a VERY strange transaction. I bought it from the seller, who also lives in California but the rifle is out of state in the hands of a "custodian" who doesn't know anything about guns. So what we have is a face-to-face, inside the state, with the firearm not present. Pretty strange. As the owner I can transport my property between states so when I get the stock I'll make the Monte Carlo and go get the rifle. Or maybe, since you can ship to yourself, I'll send UPS paperwork to the custodian and have him ship it to me "stockless". I haven't gotten quite that far in the process yet.

I have been trying for some months to find one of the factory, or "european" stocks for the Tiger but have just plain struck out. If you do hear of one that is available at a price that an old retiree can afford I'd love to hear about it. I can't believe that one of the stock outfits hasn't made one as they would sell like hotcakes into California. Imagine that the Dragunov were suddenly available to the entire California market. The value of the rifles would go up (more demand) and we the downtrodden of the Feinstein state would be able to enjoy them.

And yea, I'm the same galahad from the Bay Area. I spend most of my time over on Survivors SKS boards (I'm a moderator there) as I am really an SKS nut who tends to overflow. On order is a Garand and the Tiger is chomping at the bit to come home. :)
