howdy -
Well I'm new to this AK addiction, but I cant fight the urges anymore, so I decided to buy the AMD-65 parts kit minus the reciever (ofcourse). I recieved the parts kit and was hooked ! Now I need to get started on my reciever. By the way -- I have learned more than I thought I could off of these posts, I just happened to run accross this website, and decided to check it out........glad I did. Anyway, I've got a reciever flat coming/ backorder/ and what I want to do is use it as a template for a couple practice recievers before I make the final one. So I need to know if there is a preference in thickness of the sheetmetal or steel plate that is fairly inexpensive, so I dont feel so bad when I f*#k one up, and if by some miracle one of my practice recievers happens to turn out, I could use it...............
Thanks for your help
I'm sure I'll be turning to you guys for help through this first time project

squeoche don't waste your time with the receiver flats. Just get the ACE ak-47 blank bent metal that comes with a template. It is the correct thickness and Material - 4130 Steel Alloy. http://www.acearms.com

I HIGHLY recommend this thread from Gunsnet.net:

I have yet to see a functional rifle built from a stamped flat. There are jigs available, but I have yet to see the results from one. The bent blank is a great choice for a first completely homebuilt receiver. I assume that a stamped flat could be made functional, but why not use a method that pretty much guarantees success?

The best thing I can recommend for a receiver flat, is to cancel the order. You will get much better results with a bent blank, and they are easier to fix if you screw up a little.

Ok guys - I took your advice and tried to cancel the order for the reiciever flat today, but its already been shipped. So I'll see what it looks like when I get it. And I ordered a pre- bent reciever today from ace arms. Thats probably the way to go -- couldnt beat the price! Thanks for your advice -- get back to you when my parts get here..
